Structural Integration (SI) - Rolfing
Structural
integration, also known as Rolfing, is the method Dr. Ida Rolf developed
that is based on deep tissue manipulations, and movement education, with
the intention of re-aligning and re-educating the human structure within
the field of gravity.
Structural
integration is a non-symptomatic alternative medicine and holistic
approach that beings with an initial series of 10 sessions of deep
tissue manipulations and movement education. Some other branches of the
inheritage of Dr. Ida Rolf are similarly starting with an initial
series, with a slightly different number of sessions however, and
usually a closely related format.
Although the symptoms
are not the primary concern of the practitioner, structural integration
often has long term positive effects with a broad variety of locomotion
related conditions, general as well as localized, especially chronic
myofascial conditions where conventional approaches often are not the
most adequate, and sometimes overly invasive as in surgical procedures.
Chronic movement, neuro-muscular, and myofascial, conditions
respond particularly well to structural integration.
The experience itself
of re-discovering a sense of harmony in one’s body is one of the most
appreciated processes of SI, along with better movements, being better
grounded, using the body more harmoniously with less energy, and more
efficiently within the field of gravity.
Because structural integration deeply changes the body, it is usually not recommended to extend the basic 10-series right away, and instead, it is advised to wait a few months before additional sessions “”tune-up 3 series, or also the advanced 5 series). Sometimes however, some severe chronic conditions can be considered exceptions to the general rule, and more attention can be given to such cases.
